No one really knows where Texas Holdem as we know it today, came from. There is no precise information in regards to where the first game of Texas Holdem Poker was played. However, according to stories, the earliest game played was in Robstown Texas in the early 1900s and it first came to Dallas Texas in 1925. What I understand as happening is the game – as we know it – was invented by a cattle boss in the late 18 or early 19 hundreds.

When large cattle herds were the way of the west, it took large groups of ranch hands to care for them. Even so, there’s a lot of down time when you’re tending to cattle. You move them here – you move them there – and you socialize while you wait to do it again.

5-Card Draw was a popular game to pass the time, but it didn’t accommodate many players. You could have 10 players, but then it wouldn’t be 5-Card Draw – It’d be 5-Card Hold. So it was optimally played with 5-6 people. Finally one Lead Ranch Hand figured out that if you dealt 2 cards to each player, turned 5 cards up, with the best 5 cards winning, you could play with as many as 18 at a time.
